Roald Dahl The BFG
Regular readers of this blog will know that I am a huge fan of The BFG. I read a lot as a kid and this has become my favorite ever since I read the first chapter. I love all of Roald Dahl's children's books, I just can't get myself to read any of the 'adult' stories he writes. Remembering our favorite Dahl character, we've come up with a list of everything we learned from The BFG.
The BFG was published in 1982 and has been adapted for the big screen several times. This is the story of the young orphan Sophie and her unlikely friendship with the Big Friendly Giant. The story tells of their adventures and challenges in stopping mean giants from hunting human beans for food. I've taken a look at this amazing story to bring you the life lessons of The BFG and it shows why it's such an enjoyable story.
Not all heroes wear capes
There is a clear theme throughout this story and it is one of bravery and defiance. A young girl living in an orphanage may not be your stereotypical heroine, but she stands up and fights gruesome giants alongside the BFG. Constantly outsmarting them, she finally comes up with a cunning plan to defeat them once and for all.
And then there's the BFG himself; A kind, friendly, optimistic giant who is ashamed of his peers and wants the world to know he is not one of them. He overcomes his fear and fights back and stands up to the giants who bully him.
Kill them with kindness
The unlikely friendship between Sophie and The BFG will always hold a strong place in my heart. Both are considered outsiders and have no friends until they find each other. Sophie shows the BFG a kindness that she isn't used to in Giant Country, having been teased for being nice all her life.
The BFG rebels against the other giant's love for eating human beans and travels to Dream Country to bottle up dreams instead. He then uses his trumpet and blows dreams from the windows of the sleeping children. The BFG puts himself in danger to travel to catch dreams and the consideration and kindness he shows toward children reveal his true character.
If You Decide Anything is Possible
When the BFG gives up hope of getting rid of the terrifying giants once and for all and foils their plot to usurp the human beans, Sophie hatches a plan. She is an intelligent young girl who not only manages to get into Buckingham Palace but
Convinces the Queen to help her.
The world can be a dark place at times but goodness wins.
This is a common theme that winds its way through most of Roald Dahl's books. Whether it's the terrible Trunchbull in Matilda, the hateful, ugly Twits who torment each other daily, or James' cruel aunt who forces him to do hard labor... good always overcomes bad in the end.
The evil monsters who harass and threaten the BFG and roam the countryside looking for human beans are defeated and imprisoned. Sophie and the BFG are then free to live a happy life - the BFG in a posh castle and Sophie in a cozy cottage next door.
